So, I was standing in the playground this afternoon waiting for J to come out of class and couldn't help over hearing a conversation that a few mums were having.

They were discussing children and behaviour whilst out and about. Their children are in the same year as J, so I was intrigued to hear what was said (without it looking like I was deliberately ear wigging).

By the sounds of it they were discussing another parent and her disciplining of her child/ren. Whether they were berating her, I don't know (that's what happens when you hear half a convo!).

Anyway, I was shocked to hear one of the woman say this "My mum always said, children should not be seen in the high street or supermarket". She then went on to say that she never takes her children to the supermarket and never shopping (if she can help it).

Now, the supermarket I can understand. What kid wants to spend a few hours of their time trawling round the supermarket...hell, what adult likes doing that? I sure don't....that's why I shop online :)

But seriously...children should not be seen in the high street? Sometimes you have to take your child shopping, you have no option...but is it really that bad for the "elder" generation to see children out at the shops?

K loves to shop (she gets it from me) and we can spend hours walking around looking at the pretty clothes, shoes and bags. She's not doing anyone any harm and not causing any problems.

J, on the other hand doesn't like shopping (typical boy), so he only comes along if necessary. He has thrown tantrums at the shops and I have been tutted at. He screamed down a GAP store at a few months old and you should have seen the look on the face of a woman in there. It was like I had committed murder.

Children are children at the end of the day. They cry, they get frustrated and bored, but some parent's don't have the option of leaving their children at home whilst they shop. Fair enough if you're planning an all day shopping trip, then yes, its not very nice for young children.

But is it really fair to say that children should not be seen in these places? Isn't that just a little harsh? I know I am very wary when taking the children out that they are on their best behaviour. I am very conscious that people look at judge you (well that's how I feel). It's also the case of where do you draw the line with punishment whilst out and about? People like to stare as you tell your child off.

Personally, I think its good for children to experience these places. They learn how to act socially. If you don't take them out, then surely they're just going to run you even more ragged when you do eventually take them as it'll be new scenery for them.

What do you think? Should children NOT be seen in public?
